DMedC and DPHC Context

GOV.UK announced that HQ Defence Medical Services (DMS) became Defence Medical Command (DMedC) in 2026. Defence Medical Services public pages provide broader MOD healthcare context.

This wiki uses:

  • DMedC for Defence Medical Command.
  • DMS for Defence Medical Services.
  • Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC) for Defence Primary Healthcare.
  • DPHC Firmbase for domestic UK MOD DPHC care.
  • DPHC Overseas [DPHC(O)] for MOD DPHC overseas care.
  • DGP for Defence Global Practice.

Why the Context Matters

NHS App continuation and/or adoption by DPHC-registered patients depends on more than the NHS App itself. It depends on how MOD primary-care registration is represented to NHS national services, how MOD systems integrate with NHS systems, and how patient cohorts move between NHS, MOD DPHC Firmbase, and DPHC(O) care models.

MOD NHS commissioning statistics define Defence Medical Services registration as a MOD-provided primary-care / GP-services context rather than ordinary NHS primary-care provision. That supports the wiki's registration-state boundary, but it does not by itself answer how NHS App dependencies interpret the registration.

NHS England Route and UK Reach

The corrected programme-planning baseline is 103 UK DPHC Medical Centres, of which 89 are in England. England therefore represents 86.4%, or approximately 86%, of the estate.

The baseline has been validated by the project owner for this programme context and supersedes the earlier internal denominator of 106. The underlying estate artefact is not retained in the repository, and the figure should be rechecked when the estate changes or before use outside this decision. The MOD-published April 2025 Total Triage source used a separate denominator of 105 centres.

Project-owner direction states that all DPHC patients are registered as NHS England patients, irrespective of where they live in the UK. The proposed enablement therefore includes DPHC patients resident in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They can benefit from applicable NHS App core national services, appointment information from participating NHS providers in England where relevant to their care, and an assured Defence Medical Information Capability Programme (DMICP) appointment-reminder route once implemented. Residence remains a service-specific factor for functions such as NHS 111 online and local service finding; it is not an exclusion from the proposed mobile-access cohort.

ODS and Registration Boundary

Organisation Data Service (ODS) evidence now gives useful MOD / DMS context, but not a complete DPHC Firmbase registration answer. Current ORD queries identify DDG Defence Medical Services as an active Independent Sector Healthcare Provider, DMS-operated sites, XDM Ministry of Defence as a Government Department, and S22029 Ministry of Defence as a Scottish GP Practice. ODS GP-practice reference data also explains that commonly named GP Practice ODS codes are Prescribing Cost Centre codes, with GP Practice as a specific subset.

The DGP guide adds DPHC(O) context: DGP is presented as a registered UK General Practice and DPHC(O) practice for eligible overseas patients who are not served by a fixed DPHC medical centre. It also supports UK primary-healthcare record-management context after DGP registration.

For this wiki, those identifiers and registration statements are boundary evidence. They do not by themselves prove that a DPHC Firmbase or DPHC(O) patient is represented to Personal Demographics Service (PDS), NHS App, GP Connect Patient Facing APIs, Interface Mechanism 1 (IM1), linked profiles, proxy setup, or GP-record services in the same way as an ordinary NHS GP-registered patient.

Programme Cortisone / CORTISONE

MOD announced a TPP-delivered digital medical-record programme for armed forces personnel, intended to integrate with the NHS. Source wording is time-specific: the 2026 GOV.UK announcement uses Programme Cortisone in article prose and Programme CORTISONE in a quoted supplier statement, while the 2025 annual report uses Op CORTISONE for the same programme evidence strand unless later evidence distinguishes it. This is a major future evidence target, but it does not yet define NHS App feature availability.
